$,3200 cockatoo stolen from pet shop
A retail theft recently at the Quakertown Farmers Market turned out to be anything but routine, as police arrived to find that a robber had made off with an exotic bird worth thousands of dollars.
Richland Township police responded Oct. 4 to Fins, Feathers, Paws & Claws, in the Quakertown Farmers Market, which reported the theft of a female sulfur-crested cockatoo, valued at $3,200, according to a news release.
The white bird was still not recovered Saturday, nearly two weeks after it went missing, and the business was offering a $500 reward to anyone with information leading to the bird’s safe return and the arrest of its captor. Anyone with information is asked to call or text 215-783-9944.
“We haven’t heard anything from the police or had any leads of our own,” owner Tom Herron said Saturday morning.
The cockatoo, which does not have a name, was hand-fed and raised by the store’s staff. Employees are devastated at the thought of her not receiving proper care.
“We are very concerned about the well-being of this animal as all of our birds are on a very specialized diet and require specific care,” a recent post on the business’ Facebook page reads.
Fins, Feathers, Paws & Claws, established in 1985 in Harleysville, sells a variety of pets, including cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, fish and reptiles.
The Quakertown store, which opened in 2009, occupies a 6,000-square-foot space at the south end of the Quakertown Farmers Market, 201 Station Road.
