Hospitals see record cases as daily infections surpass 8,000

There were 8,053 new coronaviru­s cases reported by the state Department of Health on Saturday.

To date, there have been 351,667 infections statewide.

Saturday’s report included a recordhigh number of hospitaliz­ations statewide, as well as a record for daily cases in the Lehigh Valley.

The seven-day moving average of newly reported cases was 7,015 on Saturday, up 15% from 6,089 a week ago.

Deaths

Overall: 41 new deaths, compared to 21 the day before. That brings the total to 10,275.

Hospitaliz­ations: There were 4,253 people hospitaliz­ed Saturday afternoon, compared to 4,114 the day before. Of those, 465 patients were on ventilator­s.

Testing

There were 25,891 tests administer­ed Saturday, for a positive test rate of 29%. The cumulative positive test rate is now at 10.4%.

Lehigh Valley

Cases: 534 new cases (298 in Lehigh County, 236 in Northampto­n County), compared to 504 the day before. That brings the total to 20,182.

Deaths: 1 new death (in Northampto­n County), compared to 0 the day before. That brings the total to 714.
