It’s time to break out the board games
As we spend so much more time at home these days, families seek alternative ways to entertain themselves. Thanks to something that originated way back in ancient Egypt, there is at least one way to cope better — board games.
We often complained as kids how bored and hot we were during summer vacation. Mom used to answer our whining with, “Get a board game or coloring book and crayons from the basement and take them outside under a shady tree.”
As a young kid, I had just assumed she meant “bored” games, something to play when we were bored. Ha, who knew?
One of my current favorite board games is Qwirkle. If you haven’t seen or played it, it’s a blast. But my absolute, all-time-favorite board game is Monopoly (originally called TheLandlord’s Game), having played it constantly as kids. We were so hooked on it, we sometimes got up at 4 a.m. to play it, even on school days.
As winter approaches and we continue to spend considerably more time indoors, maybe it’s time to dig out that box in the basement or attic, marked “board games” or perhaps titled “bored games.” Have fun.
