Two Macungie Troop 71 Scouts earn Eagle Scout

-

Adam Goldstein and Nicholas Luey received the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held Jan. 10 at Macungie Memorial Park. The two Scouts are members of Boy Scout Troop 71, which is sponsored by Solomon’s United Church of Christ, Macungie.

Adam Goldstein, son of Jason and Melissa Goldstein, joined Cub Scouts with Pack 71 of Macungie. He progressed through the Cub Scout ranks, earned his Heavy Shoulder Award, and achieved his Arrow of Light in 2013.

After Cub Scouts, Adam chose Troop 71 to continue his Scouting career. As a Boy Scout, Adam earned 29 merit badges and held various leadership positions including patrol guide, assistant patrol leader, and patrol leader. He also attended National Youth Leadership Training. Adam is a member of the National Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honor Society made up of Scouts elected by their peers.

Adam participated in many troop events including camping and hiking at Gettysburg National Military Park, as well as exploring New York City and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. He attended summer camp at Trexler, Rodney and Hawk Mountain.

For his Eagle Scout project, Adam built and stained 10 picnic tables for Macungie Memorial Park, two of which have a handicap extension. These tables have been used both by the pool and by the park for various events hosted throughout the year. Adam led and guided his fellow Scouts with the help of his mentor and grandfather, Terry Hillegass.

A 2020 graduate of Emmaus High School, Adam is pursuing a major in engineering technology at Drexel University.

Nicholas Luey, son of Christina and Joshua Luey, joined Pack 71 as a Tiger Scout. He progressed through the Cub Scout ranks, earned his Heavy Shoulder Award, and achieved his Arrow of Light.

After Cub Scouts, Nicholas chose Troop 71 to continue his scouting career. As a Boy Scout, Nicholas earned 21 merit badges and held various leadership positions including patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, troop guide and quartermaster. He also attended National Youth Leadership Training. Nicholas is a member of the National Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honor Society made up of Scouts elected by their peers.

For his Eagle Scout project, Nicholas refurbished a section of the Sheeprock Trail, Macungie, that is hiked annually on Thanksgiving morning by members of the community. After seeing a stream erode the trail over his many years completing the hike, he decided he wanted to do something about it.He narrowed the stream’s channels, cleared debris, and constructed crossings to bridge the gap over the stream for safe passage, coating them in outdoor paint ensuring they would be protected for many years.

A 2020 graduate of Emmaus High School, Nicholas is attending Rochester Institute of Technology where he is studying biomedical engineering.
