Spring programs, summer camps at Jacobsburg

Jacobsburg Environmen­tal Education Center, 400 Belfast Road, Bushkill Township, is offering the following programs and summer camps:

Hike for Health: 5:30-7 p.m. April 6. These guided monthly hikes are 2 to 2.5 miles over uneven terrain. Dogs are welcome to hike on a leash. Meet at the Visitor Center flagpole at 400 Belfast Road. Registrati­on is not required. Join the email reminder list by contacting the center at 610-7462801 or jacobsburg­sp@pa.gov. Weekly Weeders: 8:30-10:30 a.m. April 7 and 14. Interested in learning more about gardening with native plants? Volunteer to work alongside the education staff as they mulch, pull weeds, divide plants and amend soil in the center’s native plant garden. Instructio­n, tools, and weeding mats are provided.

Primitive Shelter Building for Scouts: 9:30-11: 30 a.m. April 16. Learn about and practice building primitive shelters using natural materials. Be prepared for a short hike that may involve muddy slopes and uphill climbs. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water and a snack. This program is specifical­ly for Scouts. Each Scout must register individual­ly and include the name of an adult that will accompany them. Troop registrati­ons will not be accepted.

Welcome Spring! Hike: 1:303:30 p.m. April 16. Search for wildflower­s, new plant growth, migrating birds and other signs of spring. Be prepared for a moderate hike that may involve muddy slopes and uphill climbs. Bring binoculars, a camera, water and a snack, and wear sturdy shoes. Registrant­s will be contacted with the meeting location prior to the event. Register all members of your party including adults and children as space for this program is limited to 20 attendees total.

The Henry Family and the Revolution­ary War: 10:30-11:30 a.m. April 30. Adam Stephan, vice president of the Jacobsburg Historical Society, will speak about the Henry family involvemen­t with the American War of Independen­ce. The story is not often told even among local historians. Journey with Adam as he shares the Henry family history in the American Revolution and their very important role in Pennsylvan­ia’s history and the beginning of our new nation.

DiscoverE Hide ‘n Seekers: age 5 only. Nature Detectives 9:3011:30 a.m. Tuesdays June 21, June 28, and July 5. Campers will learn about things that fly, water dwellers, and life in the undergrowt­h. This program will prepare campers that have aged out of Tales for Tots for Outdoor Explorers. Campers must be accompanie­d by an adult each day of camp. Your child will be enrolled for all three Tuesdays. There is a nonrefunda­ble $15 registrati­on fee for this camp. No walk-in or phone registrati­ons at this time.

DiscoverE Outdoor Explorers: ages 6-8. The Transforme­rs, 9 a.m. to noon July 19-22 or 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 9-12. Explore the secret lives of insects. Learn about the flying and crawling friends that call Jacobsburg their home. Go on an adventure through our fields, creeks, and forests with nets and bug boxes to see what kinds of creatures you can discover. There is a non-refundable $25 registrati­on fee for this camp. No walk-in or phone registrati­ons at this time.

DiscoverE Penn’s Adventurer­s:

ages 9-12. 9 a.m. to noon July 19-22 or 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 9-12. The theme of this camp is sustainabi­lity. Participan­ts will work with a local artist and use recycled materials to create their own works of art. There is a nonrefunda­ble $25 registrati­on fee for this camp. No walk-in or phone registrati­ons at this time.
