A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from April 3.

2006: Parkland coach Patti Heffner, who led the Trojans to a school-record 31 wins and the PIAA Class 4A girls basketball championsh­ip, is named the Class 4A coach of the year by the Associated Press. Freedom coach Kim Mikulski, whose team beat Parkland in the District 11 final, finishes second in the voting. Also, Tamaqua’s Erika Barron, one of the leading scorers in the area with a 27.2 point average, and Marian Catholic’s Jody Searfoss are named to the Class A first team.

2002: Central Catholic senior Jackie Adamshick is named the AP’s Big School girls basketball player of the year after leading the Vikettes to their second straight PIAA Class 3A championsh­ip. Adamshick, who averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals a game, is also named to the first team of the AP’s All-State team.

1993: North Catholic (30-2) ends Bethlehem Catholic’s dreams of a PIAA Class 3A girls basketball championsh­ip with a 62-42 win over the Golden Hawks (26-7).

1980: Tamaqua’s Cindy Miller, the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,155 points, signs a letter of intent to play at the University of North Carolina, ending a recruiting chase that brought her 70 scholarshi­p offers.

1976: A crowd of 3,700 at Muhlenberg’s Memorial Hall watches John Newcombe defeat Rod Laver 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in an exhibition tennis match.

1972: Mario Andretti becomes the first American to win a U.S. Grand Prix when he takes the lead with three laps to go and holds off Niki Lauda to win at Long Beach.
