A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 22.
2010: Moravian’s third NCAA Division III softball World Series appearance in seven years ends when the Greyhounds drop a 3-0 decision to Eastern Connecticut State in a second-round elimination game. Moravian finishes the season 34-15.
2008: Sophomore Katie Pitsko’s 23rd goal of the season with 8 ½ minutes left in overtime lifts Nazareth to a 2-1 victory over Emmaus in the District 11 Class 3A spring girls soccer championship game, snapping the Green Hornets’ run of consecutive titles at three.
2003: A small crowd of around 300 watches Bangor (Maine) beat the Allentown Ambassadors 2-1 in the independent baseball team’s seventh season opener at Bicentennial Park. It would be their last.
1995: In the first league showdown between two of the area’s top softball programs, Northern Lehigh edges Southern Lehigh 2-0 to win the Colonial League title in its first year in the league. The Bulldogs had won the previous three Centennial League titles while Solehi had won 19 of the previous 22 Colonial championships.
1997: Josh Perich belts four hits, including a two-run homer and grand slam, and knocks in nine runs to lead Northwestern to a 24-14 win over visiting Palisades in a District 11 Class 2A baseball quarterfinal.
1995: Emmaus beats Stroudsburg 5-0 to win its fourth straight District 11 team tennis title and cap a second straight unbeaten season. 1995: After three misses in the previous seven years, Emmaus wins its first East Penn Conference baseball title with a 5-3 victory over Bethlehem Catholic.
1992: Pocono Mountain’s Kendrick Morgan breaks a 14-year-old state record and wins the PIAA Class 3A triple jump title with a leap of 50-1 ½, the first time the 50-foot mark had been surpassed in the meet’s history.
1987: Parkland leadoff hitter Dan Yannes caps a spectacular afternoon with a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Trojans a 13-9 District 11 Class 3A quarterfinal win over Whitehall. The grand slam is Yannes’ second of the game, the home run his third of the game — giving him nine RBIs — and he also adds a triple.
