‘Evening with Matt Millen’ fundraiser to be held June 22
The Penn State Alumni Association’s Lehigh Valley Chapter’s next fundraiser will feature a prominent Lehigh Valley native who starred in football at the school and then had an outstanding professional career, winning four Super Bowl rings.
An “Evening with Matt Millen” will be held beginning 6 p.m. June 22 at Homewood Suites by Hilton in Upper Saucon Township. The event is being held as a scholarship fundraiser for
Penn State Lehigh Valley students.
Millen, who last month was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Sports Hall of Fame, will discuss highlights from his long football career and share lessons learned, according to a news release. He will also give his perspective on current trending issues in college football.
A Whitehall High and Penn State graduate, Millen was a four-year starter at defensive tackle at Penn State, then won four Super Bowls in the NFL in 21 seasons overall with the Raiders, 49ers, and Redskins. He was named first-team All-Pro in 1984 and ‘85, and chosen for the Pro Bowl in 1988. He also has been a team executive and broadcaster in the NFL.
Millen, who lives in Bucks County, also received a heart transplant in 2018 after being diagnosed with amyloidosis, a rare disease that causes the body to produce abnormal amounts of protein that attack the heart, making it stiff and unable to pump properly.
Another Valley native who also played for Penn State in the 1970s and later in the NFL, Mike Guman, will host the event. Guman, who graduated from Bethlehem Catholic High School, was a running back for the Nittany Lions and the Los Angeles Rams.
The event will include light fare and cash bar, a silent auction and 50⁄50 raffle. Individual tickets are $30 for Alumni Association members and $40 for nonmembers, with table sponsorships available.
