A. Marie "Marmee" Johnson
A. Marie Johnson, loved by many as “Marmee”, 81, of Allentown, passed away on July 1, 2022 surrounded by her family at Above & Beyond at the Knights, Allentown. Born in Ridgway, PA, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Clark) Johnson.
Marie earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Slippery Rock State Teacher’s
College in 1962 and her Master’s Degree from
Kutztown University in 1986. She was employed by the Allentown School District for 36 years, retiring in 1996 as an English teacher for 7th and 8th grade at Raub Middle School. In the summer
months, she worked for the Private Industry Council (PIC) in Allentown for 12 years. One of her joys was acting in murder mystery weekends in a variety of Pocono resorts for over 20 years. In retirement she was a faithful volunteer for the East Penn, Allentown, and Northwestern Lehigh School Districts. Marie found great joy in volunteering at the Liberty Bell Shrine Museum in Allentown, where, among other roles, she served as a puppeteer for the annual “Pip the Mouse” event. She also served on the Auxiliary at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and as a front of house volunteer. In 2017 she received the Lehigh County Unsung Hero Award for her outstanding volunteer service.
Marie was known for her deep love of her family, her commitment to saving animals, and her passion for the arts and literature. But mostly, she was known for her incredible generosity of spirit and made a difference in the lives of countless people.
