IronPigs snap 3-game losing streak

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (41-35) snapped their three-game losing streak on Friday evening as they defeated the Syracuse Mets (31-44) 7-5. The IronPigs recorded 11 hits – six for extra base hits.

Jake Newberry got the spot start for Lehigh Valley after Bailey Falter was promoted to Philadelph­ia prior to the game. He pitched two scoreless innings. Lehigh Valley took a 2-0 lead against Tim Adleman and the Mets in the top of the second inning as Jorge Bonifacio hit an RBI double that scored Donny Sands and Josh Ockimey scored on a ground ball double play.

Syracuse tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning as Mark Vientos hit a two-run home run against Jeff Singer that scored Khalil Lee. Daniel Robertson hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning against Adleman.

The Mets jumped ahead 5-3 against Singer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Dini hit an RBI single that scored Patrick Mazeika and Gosuke Katoh hit a two-run home run, his first of the season.

Bonifacio and Rafael Marchan hit back-to-back home runs against Yoan Lopez in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The ‘Pigs added a run in the top of the seventh inning as Dalton Guthrie stole home against Lopez. The stolen base was Guthrie’s ninth of the season.

Ockimey scored on a wild pitch by Bryce Montes de Oca in the top of the eighth inning to extend the lead for Lehigh Valley to 7-5.

Jakob Hernandez (2-0) earned the win and extended his scoreless inning streak to 12 innings. He struck out three batters. Jace Fry pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Tyler Cyr pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning for his first save of the season.
