Paul Fedio
Paul Fedio, Jr., 88, of Burke, VA, died peacefully at home on February 9,
2023, with his wife, Alison Fedio, and his much loved golden retriever, Nadyah, by his side. He was born in North Whitehall,
PA, to Paul and Anna (Dorociak) Fedio. Dr. Fedio graduated in 1956 from St. Basil's College, a UkrainianCatholic institution in Stamford, CT. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in clinical psychology in 1964 from The Catholic University of America. Dr. Fedio served as Chief of Clinical Neuropsychology in the Neurology Institute of the National Institutes of Health, where he provided a clinical service to individuals with neurological conditions and conducted research in temporal lobe epilepsy, as well as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. He was one of the first neuropsychologists to be involved in operating room procedures to test cognitive functions during brain surgery. He published extensively, presented research findings internationally, and was awarded Fellow status in three professional organizations. Following his retirement from NIH, Dr. Fedio taught graduate coursework in neuropsychology at his alma mater, The Catholic University of America, as well as George Mason University, and the American School of Professional Psychology. He also maintained a private practice in clinical and forensic neuropsychology for personal injury cases. He was a strong advocate for individuals with cognitive and emotional disorders. On a personal note, Dr. Fedio was a true nature and animal lover. He enjoyed fishing, birding, canoeing, and sledding, ideally in tandem with his dog.
Survivors include Alison Fedio, his wife of 18 years; his daughters, Deborah Gilliss of Chattanooga, TN; Kimberly (Chris) Fournier of Holliston, MA; and step-daughter, Rhiannon (friend Alex Stamatis) August of Scranton,
PA; and grandsons, Cameron Afshar, Matthew Gilliss, and Michael Adelson. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Walter Fedio of Orefield, PA; former wife, Joan Fedio; daughter, Valerie (Bruce) Adelson; father-in-law, The
Rev. Willard Prater of Hatfield, PA; sibling-inlaws, Lisl (Shawn) Prater-Lee of NY and Piers (Jennifer) Prater of PA, and their families; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Dr. Fedio was predeceased by his parents; his mother-in-law, Phyllis Prater; his sisters, Mary Kumernitsky, Ann Schlaffer, Catherine Cocco, and Helen Winarchick; and brother, John Fedio.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 4, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Burke, VA, with a viewing beginning at 12:15 pm. Interment will follow on Monday, March 6, at noon at Friedens Cemetery, Oley,
PA, where his father-in-law, The Rev. Willard Prater, will officiate. Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home of Fairfax, VA, is handling his arrangements.
