April programs at Jacobsburg

Jacobsburg Environmen­tal Center, 400 Belfast Road, Bushkill Township, will offer the following programs:

Weekly Weeders: 8:30-10:30 a.m. April 6, 13, 20, and 27. Interested in learning more about gardening with native plants? Volunteer to work alongside the education staff as they mulch, pull weeds, divide plants and amend soil in the center’s native plant garden. The staff provides instructio­n, tools and weeding mats.

Hike for Health: 5:30-7 p.m. April 12. Get moving after work with a brisk hike at Jacobsburg. These guided monthly hikes are 2 to 2.5 miles over uneven terrain. Dogs are welcome to hike on a leash. Meet at the Visitor Center flagpole at 400 Belfast Road. Join the email reminder list by contacting the staff at 610-746-2801 or jacobsburg­sp@pa.gov.

Geocaching for Scouts: 10-11:30 a.m. April 15. Learn how to use a hand-held geographic­al positionin­g system unit to find hidden caches at Jacobsburg. This program is best for Scouts ages 10 and up and will teach them the basic skills and ethics of geocaching.

Signs of Spring Hike: 1:30-3:30 p.m. April 15. Looking for a way to beat the winter doldrums? Join a search for wildflower­s, new plant growth, migrating birds and other signs of spring at . Be prepared for a moderate hike that may involve muddy slopes and uphill climbs. Bring binoculars, a camera, water and a snack, and wear sturdy shoes.

Woodland Wildflower Walk: 1-2:30 p.m. April 19. Join conservati­on volunteer Doug Burton for a 1-mile hike in Sobers Run to learn about the early spring blooms scattered throughout the forest. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.

Earth Day Tree Planting: 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m. to noon, noon to 1 p.m., 1-2 p.m. or 2-3 p.m. April 22. Sign up to celebrate Earth Day. Choose an hourlong time slot and meet in front of the visitor center at the hour you have chosen. You will have an opportunit­y to learn about invasive species and their ecological impacts, and then replace one with a native sapling. This conservati­on project aims to strengthen the riparian buffer along the Bushkill Creek and provide habitat for wildlife. Tools and instructio­n provided. In the event the event runs out of saplings to plant, there are always invasive plants to remove. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.
