Flood watch in effect for region this weekend

- By Lindsay Weber

The Lehigh Valley could be in for another bout of severe weather, as the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch throughout the region for Saturday night into Sunday evening.

The flood watch is in effect throughout the eastern Pennsylvania region, including all of Northampton and Lehigh counties.

According to the alert from the weather service, flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible throughout the region, which could case flooding in rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and floodprone areas.

The Allentown area is under a “slight” risk for excessive rainfall on Sunday, with scattered flash floods possible, according to the weather service.

Areas that received heavy rain yesterday, including northeastern Northampton and Carbon counties, are particularly at risk for flash floods.

“It won’t take much extra rainfall to get flash flooding,” according to a tweet from the weather service’s Mount Holly, New Jersey, office.

The severe weather has already led to cancellations of several events this weekend, including “Easton Cruise Night,” a car show which was scheduled to begin in Center Square at 6p.m.. Hellertown also cancelled tomorrow’s “Music in the Park” concert series event at Morris J. Dimmick park.
