Passport to History Month events
Local historical sites are partnering to host Lehigh Valley Passport to History Month. The month is a celebration of local history, stories and the community that brings Lehigh Valley history to life. Each weekend in July, different participating locations will open their doors to the public with tours, activities, and programs for visitors of all ages.
Weekend 4: July 21-23
July 21-23: Emmaus Historical Society, 218 Main St., 5-8 p.m. July 21 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 22-23. Emmaus Historical Society will be open for self-guided museum tours, children’s crafts, light refreshments, new museum displays and more.
July 22: Weatherly Area Museum, 100 Steelplant Road, noon-4 p.m. Visit Weatherly, tour the museum, view displays and follow the journey “From Canals to Rail Cars: How Weatherly and the Surrounding Area Played Roles in Transporting Coal.”
July 22: Whitehall Historical Preservation, 501 Mickley Road, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Take open Mill/Museum tours of Helfrich Springs Grist Mill and Peter Grim House, and discover the history and stories of Whitehall Township.
July 22: 1803 House, 55 S. Keystone Ave., Emmaus, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., July 22 and noon-4 p.m. July 23. Enjoy candle making, old-fashioned toys, games and root beer floats, scavenger hunts, house tours, archaeological dig news, American Flag education and an herb garden in full bloom.
July 22-23: Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum, 1401 Laubach Ave., Northampton, 10 a.m. July 22 and noon-4 p.m. July 23. The Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum celebrates its 25th anniversary with multiple new exhibits that focus on the contributions of the men and women who worked there. Their impact on the community is almost immeasurable. The Atlas is the only museum dedicated to documenting the history ofthe cement industry of the United States. The museum shares the story of cement’s impact on the Lehigh Valley, the state of Pennsylvania, the nation and the world.
July 22: Coopersburg Historical Society, first floor of Town Hall, 5 N. Main Street, Coopersburg, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Enjoy free admission to the new “Leaders and Legends” exhibit, featuring leaders who helped the town grow and prosper as well as those who started here and became national legends. What do Jersey cows, MLB baseball, and Indy cars all have in common? Come to the exhibit to find out.
July 23: Horner’s Cemetery Tours, 4965 Nor Bath Blvd., Northampton, 1-4 p.m., by appointment only. In celebration of the 295th anniversary of the founding of Craig’s Scotch-Irish Settlement – the oldest, longest, permanent settlement in the Lehigh Valley. Call 610-984-4532 to schedule.
July 22-23: Knauss Homestead, 152 E. Main St., Emmaus, noon-4 p.m. July 22-23. Visit the 1777 Knauss Homestead for tours of the historic home, the grounds and the barn every half hour.
July 22-23: Lower Macungie Township Historical Society, Camp Olympic barn, lower level, 3120 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Emmaus, noon-4 p.m. Learn about Lower Macungie Township history and Pennsylvania German culture while touring the museum. Plus, find some treasures at the flea market / inventory reduction sale in the museum during this special event.
July 22-23: Moravian Historical Society, 214 E. Center St. Nazareth, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 22 and noon-4 p.m. July 23. The Moravian Historical Society will offer free admission, guided museum tours, kids’ activities and an antique book sale. Visitors can learn about the significant contributions Moravians made to music, art, education and culture in early America on a guided museum tour. Guests can also view the exhibition, “Heartstrings: John Antes, America’s First Luthier.”
July 22-23: Northampton Area Historical Society, Siegfried Railroad Station, West 21st and Canal streets, Northampton, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 22 and noon-4 p.m.
July 23. Explore the history of the Northampton Area featuring community businesses, World War II scrapbooks that share stories of more than 1,000 of local men and women, and the creation of two Haff Hospitals.
