Four agree to contracts
Bohm headed to salary arbitration
Four Phillies players — pitchers Ranger Suarez, Jeff Hoffman, and Gregory Soto, and backup infielder Edmundo Sosa — avoided salary arbitration Thursday.
Faced with a 1 p.m. deadline to lock in a 2024 salary or exchange figures with the team and go to arbitration, Suarez and Hoffman agreed on one-year contracts for $5.05 million and $2.2 million respectively, while Sosa will make $1.7 million, according to league sources.
Soto will reportedly make $5 million.
The Phillies didn’t reach an agreement with third baseman Alec Bohm. The sides will exchange figures and be assigned a hearing date next month.
They may continue to negotiate until the hearing, at which point a panel of arbitrators will award one salary figure or the other.
Suarez, 28, received a raise from $2.95 million after posting a 4.18 ERA in 22 starts last season.
He’s projected to rejoin a rotation that includes Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker and Cristopher Sanchez. Suarez can’t be a free agent until after the 2025 season.
Hoffman, 31, emerged as a trusted reliever for the Phillies last season after signing a minor league contract at the end of spring training. He parlayed a 2.41 ERA in 54 appearances into a raise from a $1.6 million salary last year.
Sosa, 27, got a bump from $950,000 last season. He played three infield positions, primarily third base, and batted .251/.293/.427 with 10 homers in 300 plate appearances.
Soto, 28, had an inconsistent first season with the Phillies after coming over from the Tigers in a trade last January. He posted a 4.62 ERA in 69 appearances but received a raise from $3.925 million.
In November, the Phillies agreed to terms on 2024 contracts with arbitration-eligible backup catcher Garrett Stubbs ($850,000), infielder/ outfielder Jake Cave ($1 million), and right-hander Dylan Covey ($850,000).
