It’s Not About Size, It’s About Convenience

- By Robert X. Murphy Jr., MD Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive Lehigh Valley Health Network

T hink about how convenience impacts your decisions. Chances are, you recently purchased something online that was delivered to your front door. Why? It was convenient. You didn’t have to navigate parking lots and long lines in a store. You ordered with a click, and your item arrived hassle-free.

These days, people demand health care convenience too. You expect access to care close to where you live and work. You expect to receive high-quality care from skilled health care professionals using the latest treatments and technologies.

You expect the best. Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) delivers it – not by focusing on the size of our health network, but by ensuring we have the experts, facilities and technology necessary for you to access world-class care conveniently in your neighborhood.

With convenient access, you can receive care more frequently, which helps you prevent health conditions or receive treatment for conditions when they are less serious. Delaying care often leads to greater health challenges down the road.

LVHN recently opened its first neighborhood hospital, Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Macungie. Neighborhood hospitals are a new model in health care delivery. They are smaller and designed to bring high-quality care to local communities without building more higher-cost, traditional big-hospital structures. Large hospitals are needed to serve our sickest patients, but fewer of them are needed as health care moves to models that keep people well and in their communities instead of waiting for them to become ill and require a more urgent, higher and more expensive level of care.

Neighborhood hospitals are easy to navigate and have a full-service ER that is open 24/7 every day of the year. An adjacent health center delivers more care convenience by providing lab services, a Children’s ExpressCARE, as well as family medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics, cardiology and outpatient rehabilitation. Because this medical campus is conveniently located within a tight-knit community, people will use it frequently and get to know the people caring for them, fostering the patient-clinician relationship that has been the cornerstone of LVHN care since the people of our community built Allentown’s first hospital 125 years ago.

Health care convenience also involves providing access to leading-edge care close to home.

As the only hospital in the region nationally ranked on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list, LVHN is at the forefront of the most advanced trends in medicine. These incredible advancements include knee replacement surgery that allows patients to go directly home from the recovery room, an outpatient procedure to treat prostate cancer that greatly minimizes the risk for side effects, and many, many more. With access to these advancements, patients enjoy the convenience of getting back to life sooner.

As new facilities open and medical advancements are introduced, having skilled health care professionals at the ready is essential. New clinicians are joining LVHN and our community every week. Last fiscal year, LVHN welcomed more than 400 physicians and advanced practice clinicians. Soon, we will create a home-grown talent pipeline by educating the physicians and health care professionals of tomorrow at Thomas Jefferson University, adding more experts to our communities to serve you.

It’s not about size. It’s about your health care convenience, which has long been LVHN’s focus. Making sure you get the right care, for the right reason, in the right location with the right outcome will always be our focus because we are committed to being here for you when you need us most. Like a package delivered to your front porch, the best health care should be available to you when and where you need it. That’s the convenience that helps you and your loved ones live your healthiest life, and it is exactly what you will receive from LVHN, your hometown health network.

Neighborhood hospitals are easy to navigate and have a full-service ER that is open 24/7 every day of the year. They are smaller and designed to bring high-quality care to local communities.
