BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

-

Chico Whyte, Executive Education Academy Charter

Chico Whyte has never made the list of area scoring leaders. In an age where everyone wants to score, he’s content to defend the rim, rebound the ball and distribute it.

But the Executive Education Academy Charter senior has made his presence felt and will continue to be a factor for the Raptors as they hope to conclude their first season with a District 11 Class 2A title and a run in the PIAA tournament.

The 6-foot-6 Whyte had a pair of solid games against Philadelphia teams in the past week.

He had the first triple-double in school history against Simon Gratz with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. He followed that up with 10 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and five blocks against Overbrook.

“I’ve been keeping my head up and trying to stay out of trouble,” Whyte said. “I’m trying to keep an open mind, trying to work hard and stay focused. I enjoy playing on this team a lot. It has been a cool season to play with these dudes.”

He admits it’s been a different season after playing the last two years at Dieruff and in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

“It was tough in the beginning, but we got used to all the travel and all the games in Philly,” he said.

Whyte is hopeful of continuing his career in college and he has received interest from Penn State-Lehigh Valley and Penn State-Berks as well as Lackawanna.

Any college coach could appreciate Whyte’s unselfish nature.

“Scoring isn’t a big deal to me as long as we get the win,” he said. “I just want to do whatever I can to help us get the victory. We’re looking forward to winning in the playoffs.”
