Sixers ownership looks at Mets bid

-

Another suitor to buy the New York Mets has thrown their hat into the ring.

Philadelphia Sixers and New Jersey Devils owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer are said to be in early talks with the Wilpons regarding the potential sale of the Mets, according to Variety.

The report went on to say that both sides declined to comment for the story.

Harris, who is the billionaire co-founder of investment firm Apollo Global Management, and Blitzer, who is a billionaire executive for the private equity firm Blackstone, were most recently in the headlines for attempting to slash the pay of Sixers and Flyers employees in March. Intended as a cost-saving measure right after the coronavirus pandemic had shut down all pro sports, they were quickly shamed into an about-face by Sixers center Joel Embiid, who had pledged to help cover lost wages for affected Sixers employees.

But Harris and Blitzer now appear to be in a position to acquire another sports franchise — and the Mets, at that.

Harris and Blitzer are not the first to consider buying the Amazin’s, however.

Former Yankee Alex Rodriguez and his fiance, pop star Jennifer Lopez, were reported to be raising capital in an attempt to buy the Mets in April. Before they popped up in the headlines, Steve Cohen attempted to buy the Mets for $2.6 billion in February before the deal fell through. Cohen walked away from the tentative agreement after the Wilpons attempted to change the terms of the deal, desiring control of the team for longer than five years, and control of their SNY network — which would have been included in the sale — beyond the expiration of its 20-year rights deal.

“I gave it my best shot,” Cohen said in a statement last February.
