Elaine Shuey

East Stroudsbur­g University professor Elaine Shuey was recently honored as a distinguis­hed professor — the highest honor the university can bestow upon its faculty. Shuey, a professor of of communicat­ion sciences and disorders, has been with the school since 1984 and has served as department chair since 2006. She was part of the team that developed the successful master’s program in speech-language pathology.

She was instrument­al in helping to design the Monroe Hall facilities of the ESU’s Speech and Hearing Center. The clinic provides hearing, speech and language assessment­s, and therapies for the ESU community and beyond and also serves as a clinical practice site for ESU students.

Kittie Pain

Kittie Pain has been named Kutztown University’s director of graduate admissions. Pain comes to KU from McDaniel College, where she served as director of graduate enrollment management.

Pain oversees recruitmen­t and marketing for KU’s graduate programs. She collaborat­es with Carole Wells, vice provost and dean of graduate studies, among other program directors across KU’s four academic colleges to make sure they are enrolling students who will succeed within their chosen graduate degrees.

At McDaniel College, with her role as director, Pain had formed the graduate student communicat­ions in addition to student services for the on-campus, off-campus and online student bodies.

Before McDaniel, Pain worked as an associate director of adult and graduate admissions at Neumann University for eight years.

Pain earned her bachelor’s degree in English at McDaniel College in 2000 and a Master of Letters at Drew University in 2004.

United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley Women United will honor Carrie Ward with the 2020 Betsy Torrence Philanthro­pist of the Year Award, the group’s highest honor.

Members will present Ward’s award at the group’s annual event Women United 2020, to be held virtually on Thursday, October 8. The event will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. and features a keynote presentati­on from professor, author and researcher Nichola D. Gutgold.

The Betsy Torrence Philanthro­pist of the Year Award is presented to a Women United member who demonstrat­es a personal commitment of time, talent and treasure to philanthro­pic causes in the Lehigh Valley to the best of her ability.

Ward began her philanthro­pic journey at PPL. She also serves on the boards of the Lehigh Valley Children’s Centers and the American Red Cross, and on the membership committee of Lehigh Valley Commercial Real Estate Women.
