Man gets 10 years for drug trafficking
A man arrested with nine suitcases of drugs in his car after a traffic stop on Interstate 78 in Northampton County was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday
U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Leeson sentenced Miguel Gonzalez Segovia, 31, to 10 years behind bars and five years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty a year ago to possession with intent to distribute nearly 200 pounds of cocaine and fentanyl.
According to court documents, Gonzalez Segovia of Veracruz, Mexico, was stopped by a state trooper who saw him driving 3 mph over the speed limit and tailgating another vehicle. Gonzalez Segovia was evasive in answering questions and provided conflicting information about his destination and the reason for his trip.
The trooper saw nine suitcases in the rented SUV Gonzalez Segovia was driving and asked for his consent to a search of the vehicle. One of the suitcases was found to contain about 50 pounds of drugs. Gonzalez Segovia was arrested and the vehicle was towed to a state police barracks, where a further search revealed more drugs, court documents say.
Gonzalez Segovia admitted that when he was arrested, he was making his fourth trip across Pennsylvania to deliver drugs for people in California. He said they would load drugs between furniture in moving trucks and drive it to the East Coast for delivery to locations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, the U.S. attorney’s office in Philadelphia said.
