As the Easton area grapples with a rash of violence this year and COVID19 forces students to spend less time in school, the Boys and Girls Club of Easton announced longer hours and an open house to showcase offerings for area teens.

There will be two additional hours available for middle and high school members at the club on Wednesdays — a remote learning day in the Easton Area School District. Starting this Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., the Boys and Girls Club of Easton, 210 Jones Houston Way on Easton’s South Side, will kick-off the extra program with an informational session and open house for registration and tours.

The fee for the membership is $15 and lasts for the fall, winter and spring months of the 2020-21 school year. Members will have access to club programs and resources but will have to pre-schedule the time they plan to visit the facility.

The club will use its Triple Play method, focusing on ways to nourish the mind, body and soul and will highlight initiatives such as the Junior Golf program. Project Learn also will be promoted to show members how they can utilize the club’s tech center for academics.

“At the end of the day, our objective is to support the Easton Area School District and families in the community,” Executive Director Dean Young said in a statement.

COVID-19 has required the program to scale back enrollment. Masks are required and social distancing rules are enforced. But Young said he believes the program is more important than ever — and the smaller program sizes have provided staff an opportunity to get to know members more and create deeper bonds.
