The Morning Call

GOREN ON BRIDGE

- BY BOB JONES

The last of the three awards from the long-ago London tournament, this for Best Played Hand, went to Jon Green, South in today’s deal.

West did well to lead a spade rather than the eight of hearts. Green won with his ace, cashed the king of clubs, and led the 10 of clubs to dummy’s ace, picking up West’s queen along the way. Green led the 10 of hearts from dummy.

East rose with his ace, cashed the jack of clubs, and exited with a low heart to Green’s jack. A club to dummy’s nine left this position:

♦ A42

♣ Void

Green led the jack of diamonds from dummy, covered by the queen, and ducked by Green. East exited with the queen of hearts to Green’s king as dummy shed a spade. Green cashed his ace of spades and East had no winning discard. East chose to part with the nine of diamonds, but Green read the position perfectly and cashed his ace of diamonds. The fall of the king gave Green his contract and the coveted award!
