8 p.m., 11 p.m., HBO): Ta-Nahisi Coates acclaimed book is adapted for the stage and reconceived as a story that plays out against the backdrop of the murder of Breonna Taylor and global protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The special conveys the essence of Coates’ letter to his teenage son on what a Black male coming of age in contemporary America must be prepared to face.
(8 p.m., 12 a.m., LMN): After her cousin Madison (Sydney Meyer) tricks her into a compromising situation, high school senior Hanna (Keara Graves) thinks she may be able to get her scheming relative to stop blackmailing her if Hanna agrees to take her college entrance exam for her. Unfortunately, the twisted Madison has no intention of letting her off the hook that easily, and her scheme takes a far more deadly turn in this 2020 thriller.
9 p.m., Showtime): Writer-director Paul Schrader’s deep 2018 drama casts “The Good Lord Bird” star Ethan Hawke as a pastor at an upstate New York church that is situated along the Underground Railroad and about to mark a milestone. He’s forced to face his troubled past when a pregnant member of his ever more sparse congregation (Amanda Seyfried) seeks his help, triggering a shocking attempt by him to resolve his own crisis of faith.
“The Angel Tree” (10 p.m., HMM): Hallmark-movie staple Jill Wagner is no stranger to holiday stories and she revisits the genre in this 2020 drama as a writer determined to solve the mystery of an anonymous person who makes others’ wishes come true. Her pursuit of that individual’s identity puts her back on the radar of a friend from childhood (Lucas Bryant, “Haven”) ... and do not be surprised if love eventually is in the air.
