LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Dec. 8.

2010: Easton native and 1957 Wilson High School graduate Dave Van Horne is announced as the 2011 recipient of the Ford C. Frick award for excellence in broadcasting.

Van Horne joined the Miami Marlins broadcast team in 2001 after calling games for the Montreal Expos franchise since the club’s 1969 inaugural season.

2004: High-scoring Muhlenberg sets two NCAA Division III women’s basketball records in a 133-80 win over Haverford at Memorial Hall, scoring 78 points in the second half and knocking down 21 3-pointers. The Mules’ 133 points are also seven shy of the single-game record. Gwen Doyle hits a school-record nine 3-pointers and scores 27 points, while Kristen Piscadlo sets another school mark with 12 assists, adding 16 points.

1999: The lack of a facility to play in and a franchise with no letter of financial credit leads the United Soccer League to terminate the Lehigh Valley Steam franchise in the pro soccer league. The Steam was to play in the proposed $16.5 million minor league baseball stadium in Williams Township, but the partially completed project has been stalled for five months due to lack of money. 1990: Two area teams bring state football championships back from Hershey. Behind Spike Johnson’s three touchdown passes and Erik Marsh’s 174 yards, Bethlehem Catholic (1 2-2) wins its second title in three years by routing Seton-LaSalle 43-7 in the Class 2A title game. In the Class A final, Mike Makovec’s interception with 30 seconds left seals Marian Catholic’s 21-13 win over previously unbeaten Farrell, giving the Colts (1 3-1 ) their first state crown.
