2008: Central Catholic builds a nine-point halftime lead and later goes 11-for-11 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to beat Blue Mountain 59-47 for the Vikettes’ ninth straight District 11 Class 3A girls basketball championship.
2004: Rich Rodegheiro retires after 30 years as Quakertown’s baseball coach, finishing with nearly 300 wins in his career.
1994: Trevor Hirst, who set Liberty records with 39 goals this season and 89 in his career, is named to the Parade Magazine’s All-American boys soccer squad, joining Billy Collins as Hurricanes named to the prestigious squad.
1989: Steve Barnes scores 10 points and snags 14 rebounds to lead Southern Lehigh (22-3) to a 49-48 win over Nazareth and the Spartans’ first Colonial League boys basketball title.
1979: The Catasauqua School Board approves Ed Csencsits, a 10-year assistant, as the school’s new football coach.
1974: 19-year-old Allentown resident Eddie Ressler Jr. captures his first victory on the Professional Bowling Association tour by winning the $100,000 Winston-Salem Classic in North Carolina. Ressler, who becomes the youngest champion in the 16-year-history of the tour, pockets a first-prize check of $14,000 by beating Jim Stefanich of Joliet, Ill., 235-215. Ressler had won $2,740 in his seven previous tournaments, finishing fourth in one outing.
