Man, 30, dies in house fire, woman, children jump to safety

- Andrew Scott WASHINGTON

The Carbon County coroner’s office on Tuesday identified a man who died the day before in a house fire in Lansford.

Jonathon Honey, 30, died of carbon monoxide toxicity, coroner Robert Miller Jr. said, but the manner of death has yet to be determined.

Honey’s wife, Kierstyn Honey, and their children, Jeremiah, 7, Jackson, 2, and Jonathon Jr., 1 month, were injured when they jumped from the second floor to escape the burning home and were taken to a hospital, said his older brother, Justin Honey of West Penn Township.

The fire was reported at 4:49 p.m. in the 300 block of West Bertsch Street, American Fire Company Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hood said.

Firefighters arrived and found flames engulfing the second and third floors of one half of the threestory, multifamily duplex. Firefighters cleared the scene at 11 p.m.

A state police fire marshal is investigating.

Kierstyn Honey suffered a broken pelvis, Jeremiah suffered smoke inhalation and burns, Jackson suffered burns to his hands and arms and Jonathon Jr. suffered a slight neck injury, Justin Honey said. With mother and children in the hospital, the rest of the family is still trying to determine what led to the fire.

“My half-sister called my mom and told her there was a fire,” Justin Honey said. “My younger brother was at the scene. The coroner told me Jonathon had died. It was just a shock. I never thought this would happen.”

The Honey family moved from Slatington to Lansford while Justin and Jonathon were in grade school. Jonathon became a welder who loved working on cars and shooting pool, Justin said.

Jonathan Honey and his wife and children lived in their home for 10 years until the fire, his brother said. A GoFundMe page hasbeensetupforKierstynHoney and the children.
