A Nazareth woman is clinging to life and her husband is charged with attempted murder following a stabbing Wednesday night on Union Street, police said.

Police say Michael V. Grave, 35, stabbed his wife numerous times during a domestic assault at their home and admitted to the crime, saying “I stabbed my wife, I tried to kill my wife,” court records say.

A child in the home witnessed the stabbing, police said.

Police responded around 10:30 p.m. after getting a report that a woman had been stabbed and the attacker was still on the premises.

According to court records: Officers found Graves in the doorway of the house, bleeding from a hand wound, his clothes covered with blood. Officers found his wife on the kitchen floor in a large pool of blood, being tended to by another person. She had numerous stab wounds on her abdomen, neck, shoulder and wrist.

Neighbors told police that they heard screams coming from the rear of the home and a child who lives there summoned them for help, saying, “My daddy hurt my mommy.”

Authorities say they found the assault weapon, a large knife.

Witnesses told police that Graves called 911 after stabbing his wife. A dispatcher received a call from a person, believed to be Graves, who said, “I hurt her, I’m going to prison.”

Police interviewed a neighbor who said the child came to her for help, saying “My dad was stabbing my mom,” court records say.

Nazareth police Chief Randall Miller said the woman remained in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery Thursday.

Graves is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital-Anderson Campus, where he was arraigned Thursday by District Justice John C. Capobianco before being sent to the county jail without bail.

Officers from Bushkill Township, Colonial Regional, Upper Nazareth and Tatamy police departments responded along with Nazareth police to the crime scene, Miller said.
