Bethlehem Catholic loses in quarterfin­als

Central Dauphin coach Jeff Sweigerd Central Dauphin picked up critical wins at 138 and 172 pounds and a pin at 189 pounds to knock off Bethlehem Catholic 29-26 in Wednesday’s PIAA Class 3A team wrestling tournament.

Ben Stewart clinched the win for the Rams (18-0) with a pin of Nico Spezza at 285 pounds, the night’s final match.

Josh Miller pinned Matt Mayer at 138 for a huge swing for Central Dauphin. Ethan Pae then beat Justus Bozzi at 172 to change momentum again.

Bethlehem Catholic (3-1), which was without Dante Frinzi (15-2), a state fourthplac­e finisher at 120, had never finished lower than third in the PIAA team tournament since moving to 3A in 2015.

How it happened

106: Charlie Pavis (8-4) scored a takedown five seconds into the match against Central Dauphin’s Liam Flanagan (16-5) and never trailed. He allowed a takedown with 30 seconds left, but quickly escaped. Bethlehem Catholic 3-0.

113: Central Dauphin’s Gavin Reynolds (17-5) built a 5-0 first-period with a cradle of George Pavis (0-1). Reynolds got three more tilt points in the second period to gain the bonus-point win. Central Dauphin 4-3.

120: Cael McIntyre (12-7) registered three sets of back points in the first period en route to a technical fall over Central Dauphin’s Dallas Schorr (1-8). Bethlehem Catholic 8-4.

[b]126[/ b]: Matt Repos (26-5) picked up a takedown with 54 seconds left in the first period against Ashton Campbell (3-1), rode him out in the second and reversed him in the third. Repos then got two stalling points and two back points near the buzzer for the major. 8-8.

132: State champion Tyler Kasak (16-0) registered a technical fall over Michael Beers (13-8), 18-2 in 5 minutes, thanks five takedowns and four sets of two back points. Bethlehem Catholic 13-8.

138: After giving up the first takedown, Josh Miller (25-3) responded with a near-fall in the first period before finishing off state sixth-place finisher Matt Mayer (12-5) in 2 minutes, 27 second. Central Dauphin 14-13.

145: Andrew Harmon (14-3) recovered from an early deficit against Central Dauphin’s Ryan Garvick (23-5) to pull out an 11-9 decision. A takedown with 31 seconds left was the difference. Bethlehem Catholic 16-14.

152: Evan Gleason (16-2) kept the momentum going with a hard-fought decision over Bryce Buckman (22-4). He got a first-period takedown, a second-period escape and a takedown with 18 seconds left to secure it. Bethlehem Catholic 19-14.

160: Landon Muth (11-7) picked up six takedowns vs. Wade McClune (13-11), the last coing with 22 seconds left to secure the bonus-point win. Bethlehem Catholic 23-14.

172: Central Dauphin’s Ethan Pae (12-11) got a reversal in the first five seconds of the third period to beat Justus Bozzi (4-4) for a huge shift in momentum. Bethlehem Catholic 23-17.

189: Timmy Smith (18-4) kept it rolling for Central Dauphin by decking Chris Tartamella (2-2) in 4:41. Tied at 23.

215: Anthony DeRosa’s first-period takedown was enough to hold off Central Dauphin’s Nathaniel Mosey. Bethlehem Catholic 26-23.

285: Leading 5-1 after an early throw, Ben Stewart decked Nico Spezza with the move in 5:29 to secure the victory. Central Dauphin 29-26.

Class 2A quarterfin­als

Notre Dame-Green Pond’s season ends at 5-1 after a 56-14 loss at Southern Columbia.
