A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from March 30. 2000: John Walson Jr., the president of Service Electric Cable Television, purchases majority ownership in the Pennsylvan­ia ValleyDawg­s, the area’s 1-year-old team in the United States Basketball League.

1996: Ron Hassler steps down as Whitehall’s boys basketball coach after leading the Zephyrs to a 275-99 record, four East Penn Conference titles and five District 11 championsh­ips in 13 seasons. Including two years at his alma mater, Catasauqua, Hassler leaves with a 310-115 overall record, a .729 winning percentage.

1992: Former Central Catholic girls basketball All-American Michelle Marciniak announces she will transfer to Tennessee after spending her freshman season at Notre Dame, where she scored 12 points a game for the Fighting Irish. Marciniak will have to sit out the 1992-93 season but will have three years of eligibilit­y remaining.

1971: Northampto­n wins four of the six matches and ends two lengthy winning streaks by Emmaus in scholastic golf with a 10½ -7½ win over the Green Hornets at Willow Brook. Emmaus had won 76 straight matches since a tie with Catasauqua in 1965, and had not been beaten since a loss to Liberty in the 1964 season. It was only the fourth loss for the school and coach Keith Smith (141-4-2 since 1958).

1966: Fountain Hill High School announces it will withdraw its varsity teams from their commitment­s for the 1966-67 school year after the Bethlehem Area School Board approves a plan to transfer the school’s 10th to 12th-grade students to Liberty High School.
