HUFF’S UNION CHURCH, 540 Conrad Road, Hereford Township, will hold worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sundays in the sanctuary. The adult Sunday School meets at 9:15 a.m. and the children’s Sunday School meets during the 10:30 a.m. service. Masks and social distancing are required. THE REV. CHRISTOPHE­R DEFOREST, Kutztown, will be installed as Bishop of the Northeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia Synod of the Evangelica­l Lutheran Church in America at 3 p.m. June 4 at the Lutheran Center, Allentown, the Synod’s main office. The installati­on will follow the synod’s annual assembly, which will be held virtually on June 3 and 4.

Those who have been invited to attend the virtual installati­on service include pastors, deacons and lay people from the 251 congregati­ons in the ELCA Northeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia Synod, former synod bishops, bishops from the other 64 ELCA synods, ministry partners, ecumenical and interrelig­ious partners, and family members and friends.

Assisting in the service are the Rev. Dr. Samuel Zeiser, NEPA bishop, retired; the Rev. Carl Shankweile­r, synod secretary; the Rt. Rev. Canon Kevin D. Nichols, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem; Deacon Michael Krentz, musician.

The synod assembly and the installati­on worship service will emphasize the themes that Bishop deForest has chosen as the focus for his time as Bishop: Growing Young & Vital: Loving the Land, Healing the Hurt, & Engaging the Stranger. Bishop deForest was elected to serve a six-year term on Oct. 24 during the synod assembly held Oct. 16-24 in an online format. Bishop deForest assumed office on Jan. 1 succeeding the Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Zeiser, who had served as bishop since 2008.

Bishop deForest served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown, from 20182020. Ordained in 2011, he served at St. John Mahoning, Lehighton, until 2018. Prior to entering the ministry of Word and Sacrament, deForest worked as a video creative specialist for Tupperware; a director of communicat­ions for PartyLite; interim executive director of the Haitian Timoun Foundation, Littleton, Colorado; and admissions advisor for Wartburg Seminary. Bishop deForest received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico in 1987 and a Master of Divinity degree in 2009 from Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.
