Whitehall coach Morgan resigns after four seasons

- By Keith Groller

After three successful seasons, Blake Morgan has resigned as Whitehall High School’s softball coach.

Morgan’s teams posted a record of 47-26, including 21-5 last spring when the Zephyrs reached the District 11 6A title game and lost to Northampton 5-4 in an eight-inning thriller. His team didn’t play a game in 2020 because of COVID-19, but it is still considered part of his coaching career since he worked with the team in the offseason and in the preseason until the shutdown happened on March 13 of that year.

In a release, Whitehall athletic director Bob Hartman said: “Under the leadership of Coach Morgan, our softball program improved to a level that is competitive with every team in the Lehigh Valley.”

His 2019 and 2021 teams finished second in the district and qualified for states.

The 2020 team was also pegged for considerable success, but the season was lost to the pandemic.

“Coach Morgan and his staff worked tirelessly to get our program to a high level,” Hartman said. “We will miss the leadership of Coach Morgan. He was incredibly passionate about working towards success and put in countless hours to do so. He and his staff were outstanding at what they did and served our girls in the program exceptionally well.

“He improved the quality of our program, had some great wins, coached some outstanding student-athletes, and put our girls in positions to succeed.”

Hartman especially appreciated how Morgan handled his practices.

“Most impressive about Coach Morgan and his program was the efficiency and work that was done at practice,” he said. “The practices were detailed and productive and that work carried over to games. I have an unbelievable amount of respect for him and wish him nothing but the best in his life.”

Prior to coming to Whitehall, Morgan was an assistant coach at Parkland, where he was part of a staff that won a state championship in 2015 when his daughter Chelsea was a starter.

Morgan has also led the Lehigh Valley team in the Softball Carpenter Cup in Philadelphia for several years.

Whitehall will begin the search to replace Morgan immediately. Interested candidates are asked to reach out to Hartman in the Whitehall Athletic Department.
