LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Oct. 19. 2001: Scott Heckman runs for 232 yards in the first half to break the school’s single-game rushing record and 263 yards overall to lead Bangor to a 20-7 Colonial League win over Notre Dame-Green Pond. Heckman shatters the previous mark of 203 shared by David Menecola and Dominic DeFranco. 2000: Central Catholic, in its third year of playing field hockey, ends three long streaks by Emmaus when Steph Matt’s goal with 13:05 left in the first half gives the Vikettes a stunning 1-0 East Penn Conference win. It ends the 12-time

EPC champions’ 82-game conference winning streak and 119-game conference unbeaten streak, dating to a 2-1 loss to Allen on Oct. 9, 1991, and it’s the first goal in conference play given up by Emmaus in 62 games, dating to September 1996.

1996: East Stroudsburg University blocks three punts, returning two for touchdowns and setting up a touchdown with the other, as the Warriors upset No. 1-ranked IUP 25-12 in a raging Nor’easter storm at EilerMartin Stadium.

1995: Liberty’s Janelle Thomas completes a four-year sweep of the East Penn Conference girls cross country championship with a time of 18:12.36 at Lehigh University. Also, Liberty’s boys, who are riding a 59-meet winning streak, take the league team title.

1994: Longtime Lehigh Valley basketball fixture Eddie Mast collapses during a pickup basketball game at Lafayette’s Kirby Field House and dies of an apparent heart attack. The 46-year-old Mast, who helped Temple win the NIT tournament in 1969, came to the area to play for the Allentown Jets of the Eastern Basketball League around a few stops in the NBA and never left, serving as Dieruff’s boys basketball coach between 1983 and 1985.

1994: Kristen McCann scores four goals in Emmaus’ 8-0 field hockey win over Freedom to set an East Penn Conference single-season scoring mark with 41. The win caps a 16-0 league season for the Green Hornets, who scored what’s also believed to be an EPC record 105 goals during the season. 1991: Jeff Mittl scores both goals as Freedom (20-0-1) caps an undefeated regular season by beating Emmaus 2-0 in the East Penn Conference soccer championship game.
