LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Oct. 26.

1996:

Matt Thomas runs for 213 yards, setting Parkland’s singleseason rushing record with 1,541 yards, and the unbeaten Trojans secure their first East Penn Conference championship with a 2814 victory over Bethlehem Catholic.

1996:

Kyle Erwin runs for 135 yards and scores three touchdowns to lead Northampton to the 400th victory in the history of the program, a 52-6 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton.

1991:

Undefeated Holy Cross, ranked No. 3 in the country, and unbeaten and 19th-ranked Lehigh combine for 1,172 yards and 85 points — all but 14 in the second half — in a Patriot League game won by the Crusaders 43-42 before the second-largest crowd (14,055) in Goodman Stadium history. Holy Cross’ win is secured when the Mountain Hawks’ bid for a game-winning two-point conversion with 2:17 left results in an incomplete pass.

1984:

Freedom sets a school record with its seventh victory in a 29-6 win over Central Catholic. The Patriots (7-2), who won six games in 1974 and 1979, get three touchdowns from Brian Kalamar and hold the Vikings to no offensive plays in the third quarter, sandwiching touchdown drives around Mike Kaladay’s 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

1981:

The Reading-based Racing Sanctioned Corporation of America announces it intends to buy Nazareth National Speedway and run races on the 1 ⅛-mile track in the 1982 season for the first time since 1971.

1956:

Tamaqua’s season-opening seven-game winning streak comes to an end in shocking fashion when Shenandoah, with just two ties in six games, stuns the Blue Raiders 13-8.

1971:

A push in the last 100 yards by Mark Bennett, Steve Cohagan and Tom Ickes gives Salisbury a 2-3-4 finish and helps the Falcons beat Phillipsburg 27-30 for the Tri-County Cross Country League championship, snapping the Stateliners’ 28-meet winning streak and extending their own two-year winning streak to 14.
