No belts, but Lehigh Valley athletes earn medals

No belts for Lehigh Valley high school wrestlers, but several medals were earned at last weekend’s Super 32, the nation’s top preseason folkstyle tournament.

Here’s a recap:

High school boys 106 pounds

Bethlehem Catholic’s Nathan Desmond was one of five placers from Pennsylvan­ia at 106. The freshman beat Arizona’s Christian Castillo for fifth place.

He had three pins and a major decision before losing 6-1 in the quarterfin­als to eventual champion, freshman Anthony Knox of New Jersey. Knox beat Cadet world champion Bo Bassett, an eighth grader from Bishop McCort.

Louis Gill, who beat Notre DameGreen Pond’s Ayden Smith in the quarterfin­als en route to a 2021 PIAA Class 2A title, was eighth.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Cole Campbell was 4-2, and teammate Shane McFillin lost a pair of close decisions and was 1-2. 113

Vince Kilkeary, a 2019 PIAA 3A champion, was fourth and among three Pennsylvan­ia medalists here.

Northampto­n’s Carson Wagner, a two-time PIAA 3A medalist, was 4-2 with two losses by decision. One of his wins was 7-5 in sudden victory over Williamspo­rt’s Cael Nasdeo, who beat Wagner 3-1 in last year’s state quarterfin­als on the way to a second-place finish.

Nazareth freshman Tahir Parkins lost two close decisions and finished 4-2. Faith Christian’s Gauge Botero was 3-2. 120

Quakertown’s Mason Ziegler, a returning PIAA 3A medalist, won three of five matches, losing 4-2 to North Carolina’s Noah Luna in the consolatio­ns. 126

Bethlehem Catholic freshman Kollin

Rath was seventh, beating California’s Fernando Barreto 3-2. He won seven of nine matches, all but one by decision.

Fellow Golden Hawk Dante Frinzi, a two-time state medalist, was 2-2.

Ashton Campbell and Marco Frinzi were 1-2.

Marco Frinzi was pinned in the first round by eventual champion P.J. Duke of New York.

Faith Christian’s Max Stein was 2-2, losing both times by 2-0 scores.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Tyler Kasak, a returning state champion, finished

fifth at 6-2. He lost in sudden victory to Nebraska’s Joel Adams in the semifinals, then in an ultimate tiebreaker in the consolatio­n semis to Florida’s Danny Nini. Fellow Golden Hawk Charlie Scanlon was 2-2.

Faith Christian’s returning state 2A medalist Eric Alderfer was 1-2, losing two decisions. Bethlehem Catholic’s Landon Muth also was 1-2.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Andrew Harmon was-2-2.

Bethlehem Catholic’s James DeLuise

was 1-2. Saucon Valley’s Liam Scrivanich was 0-2, losing two decisions. PIAA 3A champion Levi Haines of Biglervill­e lost 6-4 in the final.

Quakertown’s Calvin Lachman was 1-2.

Easton’s Matt Cruise was 1-2. Faith Christian’s Leo Muzika was 3-2, losing two close decisions.

High school girls

Palisades’ Savannah Witt was 3-2 to finish fifth at 123.

Middle school

Faith Christian’s Fred Bachmann won the 75-pound title. He allowed five points in four victories. Brother Joe Bachmann won five matches to bring home the 90-pound belt.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Keanu Dillard was second at 95. He lost 4-3 to New Jersey’s Jayden James in the final.

Faith Christian’s Nicholas Singer was 5-2 to finish fourth at 120.

Faith Christian’s Cael Weidemoyer won the 145-pound belt by winning all three bouts, two by bonus point. Northweste­rn’s Dominic Sumpolec was sixth after losing 5-2 to New Jersey’s Joey Ruiz.

Northweste­rn’s Luke Fugazzotto was third at 157 by battling back with four consecutiv­e wins after losing his first match.

Faith Christian’s Adam Waters was first and teammate Jason Singer was fourth at 180. Waters outscored his three foes 27-9.
