John Stoffa
John Stoffa, 77, of Northampton,
PA, formerly of Hanover Township (Northampton County) died at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. John was the husband of Barbara Gallagher Stoffa with whom he celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage. John served two terms as Northampton County executive from 2006-2014 and previously was the Director of Human Services for both Lehigh and Northampton Counties. John served on more
than forty boards, authorities and commissions including the United Way, American Red Cross, New Bethany, "Cities in Schools," Keenan
House, Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, Turning Point Board and was a long time member of the Downtown Allentown Kiwanis Club. He was also a board member
and a founding member for the two original Miracle Leagues. John served as chairman of Hanover Township's Bicentennial Celebration and served on the Borough of Northampton Bicentennial Celebration. John was an avid trumpet player and played with the Easton Municipal Band, the Bethlehem Municipal Band, the Liberty High School Alumni band and his favorite, the Allentown Hobo Band. He also played in a brass group, A Touch of Class. John was instrumental in founding the John Phillip Sousa Concert Series held annually at the Hanover Township Community Center. John graduated from Nesquehoning High School, Penn State University, and earned a Master's Degree at Kutztown University. He was a long term member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, PA, serving as council president. John also served in the US Army for two years and an additional three years in the PA National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant (E-5) with
a MOS of tank commander.
John enjoyed making original birdhouses. He had a goal of making 500. He completed 258.
His whimsical and creative nature was enjoyed by his friends and colleagues who were gifted with one of John's 258 custom hand-crafted birdhouses, each of which was tailored specifically to the quirky personality traits of the recipient. John Stoffa's contribution to the Lehigh Valley has been and continues to be his legacy of dedication to community service. Survivors: John is survived by his wife; sons, Jeffrey D. Stoffa of Miami, FL and Gregory J. Stoffa of Philadelphia; two brothers, George Stoffa of Jim Thorpe and Robert Stoffa of Tamaqua; a sister, Lena Gorman of Dundalk,
MD. He was predeceased by sisters Mary Smith Stoffa, Anna Stoffa Wilhelm, and Margaret
Stoffa Hronowski.
