The Morning Call

Davidowich hired as new coach

- By Keith Groller

It’s a challenge to coach at a renowned program and even more of a challenge to replace a renowned coach at that program.

Kathy Davidowich is evidently up to the challenge. She is taking over the girls basketball program at Allentown Central Catholic, succeeding the legendary Mike Kopp, the winningest coach in Pennsylvania history.

Kopp resigned last winter after 42 seasons with the Vikettes and 1,045 career wins including his time at Notre Dame-Green Pond.

A release issued by the school’s athletic office Tuesday afternoon said Davidowich “brings a great understanding of Catholic education, as well as head coaching experience and a passion for the game of basketball. This combination will make her a great addition to our Vikette athletics.”

Davidowich began her basketball career at the CYO level more than 40 years ago.

The release said she fell in love with the game because of two influential coaches who taught her the fundamentals. Davidowich played basketball for Whitehall High School and for two years at Kutztown University. Her athletic career ended due to a second ACL injury.

Davidowich’s passion for the game motivated her to pursue coaching.

She coached CYO basketball at St. Thomas for 12 years and then moved to Saucon Valley High School first as a JV/assistant coach and then became head coach for three years.

Davidowich is a sixth-grade teacher at St. Thomas More School where she has been for 21 years, with 31 years in the Allentown Diocese overall.

“In addition to her basketball expertise, Kathy understands the Catholic traditions and what that means to the Allentown Central Catholic community,” athletic director Dennis Csensits said. “Her experience as a teacher enables her to build a strong rapport with student-athletes. She has a passion for developing her students and athletes into the best version of themselves. Allentown Central Catholic is excited for this new era of Vikette Basketball, and for Coach Davidowich to continue the tradition of coaching our female scholar-athletes for

success.”
