LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 18.

2010: One night after playing a franchise-record 15 innings in a win at Gwinnett, the IronPigs return to Coca-Cola Park and break that mark in a 16-inning,

2-1 loss to Louisville. Lehigh Valley pitchers throw 463 pitches in the two games, and in between, the team needs three bus rides and two airline flights to travel the 700 miles between Atlanta and Allentown. The IronPigs strike out 19 times in both contests for a two-game total of 38.

2001: For the second straight year, Pleasant Valley comes into the Mountain Valley Conference baseball championship game with an unbeaten record — and for the second straight year is denied the title by Parkland, again by a 5-2 score.

2000: Southern Lehigh ends Northern Lehigh’s 16-game winning streak and captures its 22nd Colonial League softball title in 25 years with a 6-4 win in the league’s tournament championship game.

1989: Whitehall baseball coach Joe Steiner announces his retirement following a seasonending 6-1 loss to Dieruff. In 34 years (nine at Coplay and 25 at Whitehall after the two districts merged), Steiner posts an overall 410-199 record, winning 11 league championships and eight District 11 titles.

1984: Candace Snyder’s onehitter with seven strikeouts leads Northwestern to a 5-2 win over Pleasant Valley, capping a 19-0 regular season and an unbeaten Centennial League softball championship season.
