LV FLASHBACK
A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 23.
2010: Brett Wigdor’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning lifts No. 6 Kutztown to a 2-1 win over No. 16 Franklin Pierce in a first-round NCAA Division II baseball World Series victory in Cary, N.C., that spans nine hours. The game, which began at 1:03 p.m., ends at 10:14 p.m. thanks to an hour-long lightning storm, a four-hour rain delay, and a nearly one-hour delay when a nearby lightning strike knocks out power in the area. Wigdor plates Mike Kacelowicz with the winning run from second. Four days later, Franklin Pierce ends Kutztown’s season with a 6-2 win in the loser’s bracket.
2006: West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez announces that redshirt junior quarterback Adam Bednarik, a Bethlehem Catholic graduate, will miss the 2006 season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Bednarik, who began the previous season as the Mountaineer starter despite missing spring drills following an earlier surgery, threw for 532 yards and four touchdowns in 2005 before his injury
2000: Parkland ends unbeaten Pleasant Valley’s 18-game winning streak by overcoming a two-run deficit in a 5-2 victory that gives the Trojans the Mountain Valley Conference baseball title. Terry Thomas delivers a pair of RBI singles, Ryan Parks doubles and scores twice, Chris Peters triples and scores, and Mike Mihalik hits a sacrifice fly for coach Terry Stoudt’s Trojans. The Bears get RBI doubles by Pat McGoldrick and Zach Kozicki.
1995: Wilson (19-3) adds to its school record for baseball victories in a season with its first-ever postseason victory, a 6-5 win over Shenandoah Valley in the first round of the District 11 Class 2A playoffs.
1986: By a vote of 7-4, the 11 seniors on Jim Thorpe’s baseball team (14-4) vote to forfeit a District 11 Class A first-round baseball playoff game to Salisbury in order to attend the school’s senior ball scheduled for the night of the game. Officials from both schools were unable to agree on a start time earlier than the 5 p.m. scheduled first pitch. 1980: Jim Dennis’ three-hitter carries Marian Catholic to a 2-0 win over Freeland and the Hubie McGeehan League title, the first baseball championship in school history.
1975: Sherri Christman tosses a one-hitter to lead Parkland to a 15-0 win over St. Mary’s in the opening round of the PIAA softball tournament.
