A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 25.

2003: Running in his final Indianapolis 500 as a full-time driver, Nazareth native Michael Andretti leads the race for 28 laps at one point before his run ends in another frustrating way for an Andretti at Indy — in the pits, after a broken throttle linkage forces him to withdraw after 94 laps. He later comes out of retirement to run in the 2006 and 2007 Indy 500s, finishing third in 2006 and 13th a year later.

1999: Jane Breisinger scores the go-ahead run on an error in the top of the 12th inning and 12th-seeded Dieruff, playing the first District 11 softball game in school history, stuns fifth-seeded and Mountain Valley Conference champion Easton 4-2 in the opening round of the Class 3A tournament.

1996: Liberty’s Janelle Thomas earns the fifth state title of her running career, breaking the Class 3A record for the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:21.77 to win the event for the second time in three years. Thomas’ other three gold medals had come in cross country.

1995: For the second straight year, owning the top seed proves fruitless for Northampton as the Konkrete Kids lose in the opening round of the District 11 Class 3A baseball playoffs, this time to Blue Mountain 5-4 in 10 innings.

1991: A day after winning the shot put gold medal, Notre Dame’s Michelle McKinney wins the discus to become a double winner at the PIAA Class 2A championship meet at Shippensburg.

1990: For the second straight year, Quakertown graduate Michelle Delloso, now playing at South Carolina, is named to the National Softball Coaches Association All-American team.

1985: Ending a 25-year career that produced nine individual state champions, one team state and two District 11 team titles and 11 league titles, Charlie Bartolet

Jr. steps down as Saucon Valley wrestling coach. Assistant coach Doug Koch, who coached at Bartolet’s side for 20 years, also retires. Bartolet’s dual-meet record was 248-122-8.
