LV FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 28.

2006: Nineteen-year-old Marco Andretti, a Nazareth-area native, Notre Dame-Green Pond High School grad and the secondyoungest driver ever to start the Indianapolis 500, passes father Michael with three laps to go to take the lead but in turn is passed by Sam Hornish on the final lap and finishes second by a scant .0635 of a second, the second-closest finish in race history. Michael Andretti, who came out of retirement to race against his son, finishes third, a little over a second back. Marco Andretti is named rookie of the year, the third in his family to win the award. Michael Andretti (1984) and Mario Andretti (1965) also won the award. 2005: Moravian Academy’s pair of Drew Balshi and Eric Bourassa wins the PIAA Class 2A boys tennis doubles championship with a 6-3, 6-1 finals victory over a duo from Conrad Weiser. 2004: Aubrey Aden-Buie’s breakaway goal with 30 seconds left in overtime lifts Parkland to a 1-0 win over Pleasant Valley, giving the Trojans their third straight District 11 girls soccer title.

1995: The Andretti curse at the Indianapolis 500 strikes again when Michael Andretti, the pre-race favorite, brushes a wall as he attempts to take the lead on the 77th lap and is forced out of the race.

1985: Easton’s Bryan Kostishion’s three-run home run helps Oklahoma State beat Wichita State 10-6, propelling the Cowboys to their fifth straight NCAA World Series berth. Kostishion’s sixth home run came after NCAA singleseason home run record-holder Pete Incaviglia was given an intentional walk.

1984: Michael Andretti, 21, makes his Indianapolis 500 debut and finishes fifth to earn a $119,231 paycheck. Father Mario finishes 17th. Michael is named co-rookie of the year with runner-up Roberto Guerrero, giving the family two such awards (Mario earned the award in 1965).

1981: Willie Ehrlich, majority owner of the Pennsylvania Stoners, reveals at a news conference to drum up community support for his American Soccer League team that the 3-year-old franchise is for sale.

1965: John Ireland pitches seven innings of four-hit relief and Lafayette edges Pitt 4-3 to advance to the NCAA District 2 championship game against host Princeton.
