Heat index could near 100 on Tuesday
Prepare for hot weather in the Lehigh Valley on Memorial Day and into Tuesday.
Monday will feel warm as the heat index reaches 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS advises people to take safety precautions into Tuesday as the heat index climbs to 94 degrees.
The heat index is a measure of how hot the air temperature will feel to the human body when accounting for relative humidity.
Tuesday’s air temperature will reach a high of 92 degrees. Relative humidity will hover at 40% in the early afternoon.
The National Weather Service provides tips and reminders for how to beat the heat and stay safe, such as staying hydrated, dressing in light weight clothing and remaining in areas with air conditioning.
The NWS also warns never to leave children or pets alone in hot cars. Older people and pregnant people are also at increased risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include: dizziness, thirst, nausea, heavy sweating and weakness in the body. Heat exhaustion can lead to a heat stroke. Someone having a heat stroke may become dizzy, confused or unconscious.
If you believe someone is having a medical emergency due to the heat, give them water, move them to a cool area and call 911.
After Tuesday, temperatures in the Lehigh Valley will steadily drop and the region may see rain and thunderstorms throughout the remainder of the week.
