2011: The Seattle Mariners select Cody Weiss, a Parkland graduate, with their 14th round pick (No. 432 overall) on Day 2 of the MLB Draft. The San Diego Padres also select a local product, East Stroudsburg University’s and Pleasant Valley’s Jeremy Gigliotti with the 593rd overall pick.
2005: Jen Dervories scores all three goals in Emmaus’ 3-1 win over Central Dauphin that sends the unbeaten Green Hornets (26-0) into the PIAA spring girls soccer championship game for the first time. Emmaus will meet Penn Manor, a 1-0 winner over Council Rock South.
1996: A record crowd of 5,261 packs the Lehigh County Velodrome to watch Trexlertown resident Marty Nothstein beat defending champion Bill Clay in two rides to win the national sprint title and his first U.S. Olympic team berth in the U.S. Olympic cycling trials.
1996: Bethlehem Catholic grad Pat Santoro beats Lincoln McIlvreny 12-4 to reach the finals at 149.5 pounds of the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling trials.
1996: Pen Argyl’s Kristen Maloney grabs the 14th and final spot for the upcoming U.S. Olympic gymnastic trials at the National Gymnastics Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. 1995: The Patriot League announces it will allow its football champions to compete in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, beginning in the fall.
1991: Kelly Srodes’ four-hitter powers Parkland past previously unbeaten Chambersburg 3-1 and into the PIAA Class 3A softball semifinals.
1991: Catasauqua’s Pat Kelly hits his first major-league home run, a second-inning solo shot that helps the Yankees beat Texas, 6-4.
1990: Central Catholic names former Freedom coach Rich Baksa to succeed Bob Schlosser, who had resigned in late May to take a job at Elizabethtown College. Baksa would hold the job just five years but leave with the best winning percentage (.750, 112-37) in school history, four District 11 Class 3A titles, and a berth in the PIAA Class 3A Eastern final.
