The Morning Call

Platinum recording artist Billy Ocean coming to ArtsQuest’s Musikfest Cafe

- By Jennifer Sheehan

More big-name music is coming to ArtsQuest’s Musikfest Cafe.

This time, it’s Billy Ocean, the singer famous for “Caribbean Queen” and other songs in the late ‘80s/90s, who will perform on Oct. 2.

Born in Trinidad, Ocean first found his place on the UK and US music charts with his second single “Love Really Hurts Without You,” followed by “Love on Delivery,” “Stop Me,” “Lover Boy,” and the Grammy-winning song “Caribbean Queen.”

He developed his musical style by mixing his love for calypso with early influences like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and The Beatles. Over the course of three decades, Ocean continued to write chart-toppers like “When The Going Gets Tough,” the title song for the soundtrack of the 1985

movie “Jewel of the Nile.”

After a much-need break resting and regrouping with his family, Ocean returned to the stage in 2007 with his daughter Cherie on backing vocals for his world tour. He released “There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)” and “Get Outta My Dreams; Get into My Car,” returning him to the US music charts.

In 2020 he was appointed a “Member of the Order of the British Empire” for services to

music. Among his honors: A Grammy award for best vocals, two Billboard Music awards and seven ASCAP Pop Music awards.

Tickets to see the chart-topping, platinum recording artist will go on sale for ArtsQuest members at 10 a.m. Thursday and for the general public, on Friday.
