LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

- By Morning Call Staff

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from June 10.

2020: Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf issues guidelines allowing PIAA-sanctioned and recreational sports to resume on a limited basis after restrictions had been in place for nearly three months as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

2008: Bangor freshman Stani Schiavone shoots a two-round total of 78-83—161 in a 36-hole U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier at Rockville, Maryland, and fails to qualify for the Open. Two days later, another Bangor golfer, alum Brian Bergstrol, begins his first U.S. Men’s Open at Torrey Pines but misses the cut with 25-over-167 (86-81), tying for 151st place.

2005: Emmaus’ hopes of an unbeaten PIAA spring girls soccer championship season are dashed when the Green Hornets drop a 1-0 decision to Penn Manor in the state finals at Hershey to finish 26-1.

1996: Northern Lehigh records the final out by throwing out the potential tying run at the plate after a wild pitch to preserve a 4-3 win over Villa Joseph Marie and advance to the PIAA Class 2A softball championship game.

1996: Cortney Madea throws a no-hitter and strikes out 11 while Nora Borger’s fifth-inning RBI double chases in the winning run in Northampton’s 2-1 win over Chambersburg, giving the Konkrete Kids a berth in the PIAA Class 3A softball championship game.

1993: Emmaus rallies for six runs in the top of the seventh, capped by Melissa Arndt’s two-run single, to beat previously unbeaten Chambersburg 6-4 and reach the PIAA Class 3A Eastern finals. In Class 2A, Northern Lehigh is held to one hit — Trish Treskot’s bunt single that helped set up Heather Reifinger’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, the only run in a 1-0 victory over Villa Joseph Maria that sends the Bulldogs to the East finals. Amy Croll tosses a three-hit shutout in the victory.
