Allentown Central Catholic baseball coach Brosious resigns after 9 years

- By Keith Groller

Mike Brosious has resigned as Allentown Central Catholic’s baseball coach, but don’t get the idea that he’ll have nothing to do next spring.

Brosious’ son, AJ, will be a senior at Wilkes University. Another son, Sean, will be a sophomore at St. Elizabeth University in New Jersey, and a daughter, Abby, will be a senior on the ACCHS softball team.

“They all play sports and they’re all on different teams, so after nine years of my wife, Mindy, covering it all, we can kind of divide and conquer now,” he said. “It will be nice to be able to help her out and see my kids play.”

Brosious said he resigned nine years to the day he was hired by former athletic director Mike Kopp.

His goal at the time he was hired was to see “Central Catholic baseball develop the same aura and mystique that Central basketball and football have had over the years.”

While that didn’t happen, Brosious believes he attained his goal of bringing respectability to the Vikings program.

His teams went 77-95-1 over eight seasons with 2020 having been lost to COVID-19 and played in two championship games. The Vikings lost to Freedom 1-0 in the 2016 EPC finals and fell to Northwestern Lehigh 5-4 in the 2017 District 11 Class 4A championship game.

In 2022, ACCHS went 10-11 overall, and 8-8 in a highly competitive Eastern Pennsylvania Conference that has a team, Liberty, playing for the PIAA Class 6A title at Penn State on Thursday.

“Mike Kopp brought me in nine years ago and said he wanted to change the culture of Central baseball and I think we did that,” Brosious said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t win any championships, but I believe Central baseball is leaps and bounds ahead of what it used to be. When I took over, we would face a lot of the second and third pitchers from teams who figured it’s just Central and they could win easily. But the last few years, we’re seeing a lot of aces. That shows how the program has risen over the years. I’m happy about that.”

Brosious is a 1986 Central Catholic and 1990 DeSales graduate and said it was an honor coach at his alma mater.

“I think we did right the ship and we’re not leaving with the cupboard bare,” he said. “There are five starters and the top two pitchers are coming back, so it’s not going to be a program that’s rebuilding next season.”

Brosious, who is also a prominent high school basketball official, thanked his wife, his assistant coaches and everyone involved for their support over the years.

“I know Anthony Sorrentino, who played for me and coached with me for five years, is going to apply for the job and I think he’d make a good fit,” Brosious said. “But it’s not my decision. I just wish the program well.”
