Colonial League tournament is set after regular season wraps with no surprises

The 2022-23 Colonial League boys basketball season is over and while we knew the six teams going on to the league tournament more than a week ago, we now know the seeds and matchups.

The teams receiving the quarterfin­al-round byes are No. 1 seed and East Division champ Notre Dame-Green Pond, which finished its league schedule at 17-1. The No. 2 seed and West Division champ is Southern Lehigh. The Spartans finished Colonial League play at 14-3.

Both Notre Dame and Southern Lehigh are off until the Feb. 15 semifinals at Catasauqua High School.

In Saturday’s quarterfin­als, No. 3 seed Saucon Valley (14-4) will host No. 6 Wilson Area (11-7) and No. 4 Palmerton (13-4) will welcome No. 5 Bangor (12-6). Both games are 6 p.m. starts.

In the semis, No. 1 seed

Notre Dame (17-1) will play the winner of the Palmerton-Bangor game in the nightcap of a doublehead­er that will begin at 6 p.m. with No. 2 seed Southern Lehigh (14-3) taking on the winner between Wilson and Saucon Valley.

The tournament title game will played at 7:45 p.m. Feb. 17 at Freedom after the girls championsh­ip game.

Wilson beat Southern Lehigh 56-50 for last year’s title.

The girls matchups are also set. In Saturday’s quarterfin­als, both 6 p.m. starts, No. 5 Bangor (14-4) is at No. 4 Pen Argyl (14-4) and No. 6 Northern Lehigh (9-8) is at No. 3 Northweste­rn Lehigh (16-1). No. 1 seed Palmerton (16-1) will play the Bangor/ Pen Argyl in the second game of Tuesday’s semifinal doublehead­er at Catasauqua. No. 2 Notre DameGreen Pond (14-4) plays Northern Lehigh-Northweste­rn winner in the first game at 6.

The Panthers finished the regular season at 17-5 overall, 14-4 league. The Pirates ended their year on a 17-game losing streak. They finished 2-20 overall, 1-17 league.

The Tigers won their third game in their last four and clinched a District 11 4A tournament berth by finishing the regular season at 11-11 and 9-8 league. Catty finished its season at 4-18, 4-13.

The Slaters trailed 22-7 after one quarter and 28-17 at halftime, but got 12 points from Ashton Kluska in the third quarter and Josh Giaquinto tallied 15 of his 28 points in the second half as Bangor rallied to finish the regular season at 13-9, 12-6 league. The Green Knights ended their season at 8-14, 6-12.
