The Morning Call

King surprises Bassett with film dress

-

Angela Bassett recently got a blast from her movies past when she was presented with her iconic costume from the 1993 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”

Bassett’s role as singer Tina Turner earned the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star her first Academy Award nomination, and “CBS Mornings” host Gayle King had the surprise in store for the actor during Friday’s show.

Bassett, 64, who is nominated as a supporting actress at this year’s Oscars, gleefully did her Turner dance with the fringed gold dress she wore in the musical film and said she hadn’t seen it in 30 years.

“Oh, look at this,” Bassett exclaimed when she saw the costume, which was accompanied by the matching pumps she wore.

King said that the beaded dress and embellished shoes were among the few items from the film that were preserved in the archives. They were stored in a climate-controlled warehouse on the Walt Disney lot, according to the Wrap.

“We would do take and take and take. We did that song all day,” Bassett told King. “We’d do it from the top of the song to the end of the song, completely through, not like bits and pieces. The entire thing, me and the girls, the Ikettes, and afterwards (it felt) as if you swallowed a wool sweater. And he would say ‘Go again,’ and you were like, ‘Can an actor have a moment, a minute?’ ”

Bassett did not win the Oscar for lead actress at that 1994 ceremony. This year, she became the first actor to earn a nomination for a performance in a Marvel movie, playing Queen Ramonda in the “Black Panther” sequel.

This year’s Oscars will air Sunday on ABC.

Speaking of Oscar night: ABC has announced Ashley Graham, Vanessa Hudgens and Lilly Singh will host “Countdown to the Oscars,” airing ahead of the ceremony Sunday.

Leading into the Oscars pre-show will be ABC News’ coverage during

“On The Red Carpet Live: Countdown to Oscars 95,” hosted by Linsey Davis and Whit Johnson.

Hudgens returns for her second consecutive year co-hosting the pre-show, while it’s Graham and Singh’s first time.

The pre-show will include backstage coverage from content creator Reece Feldman. TV personality Rocsi Diaz will also provide an insider perspective from the Academy’s member viewing party in New York City.

Cyrus to mark album with special: Disney+ will celebrate Miley Cyrus’ eighth studio album with “Miley Cyrus — Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions).”

The special premiering Friday — the same day of the album’s release — will feature Cyrus performing songs from “Endless Summer Vacation,” one of her classic hits and a special performance with Rufus Wainwright. It continues “Backyard Sessions,” a series Cyrus began for her fans in 2012.
