Pache injury update

-

Chances are you haven’t had quite as uncomfortable a week as Cristian Pache.

The Phillies outfielder phoned in to the training staff Monday with discomfort in his elbow. The cause? A screw inserted in his elbow in a 2016 procedure that dislodged itself and was visible under the skin.

Pache will require surgery on Monday to extricate the loose hardware, something that Thomson estimates will cost him, “weeks but not months.”

It’s Pache’s second IL stint of the season, placed on the 10-day on Friday, retroactive to July 11. He missed six weeks with a torn meniscus from April to mid-June. When healthy, the 24-year-old has been great and on the path to resuscitating a career that once made him a top prospect, batting .327 with two homers, eight RBIs and outstanding defensive play in the outfield in 32 games.

“He’s going to be back,” Thomson said, on the question of if this is a season-ending concern.

Extra bases

Jose Alvarado (elbow inflammation) has not begun throwing, but Thomson said the lefty’s elbow is feeling better, after it landed him on the IL for a second time this season. ... Seranthony Dominguez (left oblique) came out of his last bullpen session without issue and will throw another bullpen Tuesday. … Andrew Painter continues to report discomfort in his throwing elbow. He remains shut down. Thomson is unsure of next steps in evaluation of the highly touted righty. ... The Phillies dodged bullets in Saturday’s wild day of baseball. Edmundo Sosa, who was hit by a pitch and later left with cramping, was available Sunday off the bench. Matt Strahm is also fine after scraping his knee on the mound with his low-tothe-ground delivery. Off days for Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos were scheduled rest.
