Haden, Gordon on injured list

- By Jeff Schudel

Josh Gordon has had another setback, but the latest issue has nothing to do with failed drug tests or any of the other problems that have followed him like his shadow the last three years.

The Browns receiver, reinstated on July 25 by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, met with head coach Hue Jackson plus Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown and took his physical on July 26. Gordon will begin training camp on the active/Non-Football Injury list because he pulled a quad muscle working out on his own over the summer.

Gordon could miss “at least a couple weeks” with the injury, according to the Browns. A two-week delay to his first practice could mean he will miss at least one preseason game. The Browns open the preseason at Green Bay on Aug. 12.

Gordon hasn’t played since the 15th game of 2014. He was suspended all of 2015 for testing positive for alcohol in January of last year. Gordon is suspended for the first four games of 2016 as part of his reinstatement from violating the league’s substance abuse policy when he tested positive for marijuana and a dilute in March.

Gordon will not be allowed to practice during his regular season suspension, but once he passes his physical, he will be allowed to practice in training camp and play in preseason games.

In other news, cornerback Joe Haden (ankle) and rookie tight end Seth DeValve (hamstring) will begin training camp on the active/Physically Unable to Perform list. They will not be allowed to practice until they pass their physical.

The designation for Haden was not unexpected. He is progressing from ankle surgery in March, but won’t be ready for full football activity until later in the summer.

First-year offensive lineman Conor Boffeli (kneeankle) is also on the active/ NFI list.

All four players can participate in strength and conditioning, rehab and team meetings.
