Man accused of killing kitten
Police: 21-year-old threatened woman with a gun
A kitten lost its life July 23 after a Lorain man allegedly killed it during a fit of rage, according to a Lorain police report.
Jovante Dashon Nixon, 21, 1034 W. 19th St., was arrested and charged with domestic violence, burglary, aggravated menacing and cruelty to animals, the report said.
Nixon was booked into the Lorain County Jail on July 25.
Around 7:30 p.m., July 23, officers responded to the 300 block of Oberlin Avenue for an animal and weapons complaint. According to the report, dispatch received calls from the 19-year-old female victim as well as her 57-year-old grandmother.
Once on scene, the victim’s grandmother told officers she was watching her granddaughter’s pets when she heard a noise coming from her granddaughter’s front door, the report said.
Upon going outside, the witness saw Nixon exiting her granddaughter’s home holding a kitten by the neck.
After calling the victim’s grandmother a derogatory name, Nixon then “squeezed the neck of the kitten before throwing it up against the outside wall, killing it,” according to the
report.
It was learned through the 19-year-old female victim, who was Nixon’s former fiancee, that the incident began in the 1500 block of Reid Avenue. An argument ensued between the two and led to Nixon retrieving a bolt-action rifle from the trunk of his vehicle, the report said.
According to the report, Nixon pointed the gun at the victim’s head and threatened to kill her before fleeing in a small, blue twodoor vehicle. From Reid, Nixon traveled to Oberlin Avenue where he entered the victim’s residence without permission and killed her kitten, the report said.
Officers were later able to get in contact with Nixon and he was arrested after arriving at the Lorain Police Department. The report said Nixon admitted to arguing with the victim, but denied threatening her, pointing a gun at her or going to her residence to kill her kitten.
Nixon did, however, drive to the station in a car that fit the description provided by the victim. A gun was not located inside the vehicle, the report said.
Lorain Municipal Court records show Nixon entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment hearing July 25. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 27.
